Food Roots – August 6: where does your food come from?

food-roots-herbs_au

“Or what if I had simply grown up in a time when food was seasonal? When there was, in each year, a time of more and a time of less? When food was not just there in packages on the supermarket shelf all year?”

~ Jessica Prentice ~

Welcome to another edition of Food Roots!

Our food system is destroying the soil, wasting valuable resources and making us sick. The only thing that is sustainable and the only thing that can reverse the many complications of a broken food system is to get back to our food roots. We must plant the seeds ourselves. We must shake the hand of the farmer who grows our food. We must take back our food system.

Where Does My Food Come From?

We actually slowed down on food preservation this past week in order to catch up on housework, writing and everything else. My dad came into town last weekend for his now annual blueberry picking pilgrimage, but even then we picked far less than we had previously. The only thing I preserved this week was yellow zucchini, which I dehydrated. There are plans to pick another 15 lbs of berries by Sunday for jam making. I am also hoping my favorite farmer brings his cucumbers and dill to the market this weekend so we can make lots of pickles.

Does anyone have a good canned dill pickle recipe? I am running out of refrigerator space for the lacto-fermented pickles.

I am a bit disappointed that I fell behind this week, but thankful to wake up to a totally clean kitchen for the first time in a long time. It is the elusive balance that I can never find. With just about everything in season we are eating really, really well, though.

So I ask you again…

Where does your food come from?

  1. I think Mr. Linky is wonky. I just read Real Food Wednesday and several of the links were straight back to Kelly’s site and today, I want to read Turnip Thursday, but it takes me to the Dilly Bean recipe!

I’m off to write a post.

  2. I posted an oldie but a goodie of mine. Last summer I wrote a three part series on eating more locally grown foods. Today’s contribution is the second post in that little 3 part series.

  3. we picked blueberries again yesterday – 13 more pounds. I made jam. I hope the kids like it. I am not sure I have ever had blueberry jam.

  4. Just joined in Food Roots upon the advice of Kelly the Kitchen Kop. My Crock Dills were a part of Read Food Wednesday’s yesterday. Something is bonkers with Mr. Linky. I know for sure I correctly linked my posting and it’s taking it directly to my current posting not the crock pickles.
Obviously from the reader above she is finding it’s doing odd things also. I saw it on Real Food Wednesday’s yesterday also…several linked right straight back to Kelly’s site.
Any how…….I hope you all enjoy the Crock Dills I made. We sure do.
