My Simple Cast-Iron Care Routine

For so long I put off buying a cast-iron skillet because I had read a lot of confusing information on how to care for the pans. My husband surprised me one day with a cast-iron skillet and I knew it was time to buckle down and go for it. Now I use that pan at least five times per week for everything from our morning eggs to skillet dinners to breads.

I’m over at Keeper of the Home today sharing My Simple Cast-Iron Care Routine. Won’t you join me and tell me how you care for (or use) your cast-iron?

  1. I have several pieces of cast iron cook ware–some very old and some newer and I sure am glad to have them. It’s the best way to fry up meat, eggs, tortillas, grillled cheese sandwiches. My tortilla cast iron pan is always on the stove top–we use it for eggs, tortillas, sandwiches on a daily basis.
As far as caring for the pans, lots of times I simply wipe them clean with a piece of paper towel. For burnt or stuck on food I put water in the pan and then heat to a simmer, using a brush (the stiff kind for cleaning dishes) I brush the pan while it is gently simmering. Then take the pan over to the sink, dump out the water and fill with some hot water and a little bit of dish soap and with the brush clean a little bit more–then rinse put on the burner and let the burner dry out the pan. Some people are known to use salt to scour a cast iron pan. I’ve tried it, but I always come back to the brush method. Some cast iron purists would rebuke me for that. 🙂 Hope this helps

  2. Wow! A ton of comments on the other site!
This was really helpful. My previous method was to cook food in the pan, wash in cold water/no soap, and still have a dull spot in the middle that food would then stick to. I’ll pass this on to my children, and then they’ll know how to care for cast iron, which is a good thing. Someday, I hope they all have cast iron cookware, too!
