Postcards from August

It was one of the last 100+ degree days before the heat broke and the rains came. When we sat around the picnic table sharing watermelon, Kidney Bean & Greens Salad, and cold goat milk, the happy faces belied the weariness of August.

Of the five Augusts I have experienced in Texas, this may be the most extraordinary. The rain and 80 or 90 degree days have given us a respite from needing to survive the everyday. Spurred on and energized, we’ve been planting fall gardens, building new chicken coops, and making a great deal of mess in the kitchen. Never knowing what Texas will bring next, we must make hay (plant seeds) while the sun shines (cools off).

Here are a few things I’ve been reading or eating…

I’m wrapping up a work project next week and maybe then will get back to sharing a bit more. Until then, don’t forget to let a little juice dribble down your chin, friends.

  1. Shannon, I do love all the pictures you post. They remind me so much of my own childhood. We were also “survivors”; with big gardens, hunting and fishing for our meats. We were a large family and never ran out of some one to play with, work with and argue with. We enjoyed life as it happened; and I can see you all are doing as we did; and I admire you for it. I am now in the “winter” of my life; but I still garden, can and put back for the future. Keep your stories coming.
God blesses your family daily and it is a pleasure to keep up with what you are doing. Thank you.

  2. Thank you for the link to the Monsanto article. It takes a lot of guts and a risk of livelihood for many farmers to stand up to Monsanto and say “no” and to rethink their own farming methods. I don’t think that the general public has a full grasp of what is at stake here. I appreciate your directing me to the article…
