The Doable Off-Grid Homestead – The Solar Water Pump (No Batteries Needed!!!)

This video shows a sample of the types of projects you will find in The Doable Off-Grid Homestead. Moving water around is such a critical task on a homestead that it is nice to have a way to do this in an efficient manner. One way to reduce the cost is to put together a solar water pumping system that doesn’t require batteries. Ideally you could gravity feed most water, which is one thing we also talk about in the book, but when that is not an option this works well.

  1. When my sister and I assisted my daughter in butchering her meat birds, we both started laughing when we saw all those chicken feet in a bucket. My daughter had to ask so we explained that our mama had ten of her own kids and two fostererish kids as well as cousins that spent most weekends with us. Mama always cooked every piece of the chicken. All the little kids got a wing and or a foot. The older kids got the choice pieces because they needed the protein more than us little ones. But, I remember playing with my chicken foot. When you pull the back claw, the other claws fold up. I think that’s how it went. The last time I went to China, they served the chicken on a plate with everything from head to feet…no feathers. All my students who went for that trip cringed when we said yes, you eat the feet. LOL. (I have to admit that was one time saying I am vegetarian was nice.)They also couldn’t believe the fish had bones. Only in the US do we fillet everything and throw so much waste out with the bones.

Congratulations on your success. When we were children, if it hadn’t been for our garden, meat chickens, and pig, we would have starved.
